Students at Rome's La Sapienza university protesting against cuts in the higher education sector

Around 300 students gathered to protest cuts on Wednesday March 18, but were pushed back by police when they tried to leave the university grounds and join the main protest led by trade unions in a central city square (Ansa)

Protest against administrative detention

For more than 4 months now, Salwa and Sara, two Palestinian teenager girls from Bethleem have been detained in Israeli jails.Sara and Salwa, after being condemned to 4 months each, have seen their administrative detention order renewed at its term. The girls are expected to be released in January 2009.Some 100 people organized by the Coalition of Women for Peace protested Wednesday 15th October opposite the Damoun prison in Haifa to demand that Salwa and Sara be released. Altogether, some 600 Palestinians are in administrative detention in Israel, including about 15 minors who do not even know why they are being detained.
